What is Ectopic Cilia
Ectopic cilia are abnormal hair growth/s that erupts from inside of the eyelid and directly contacts the cornea causing discomfort and irritation. The disorder is not usually dangerous, but it is painful for your pet and if it is left untreated can lead to corneal ulceration.
Ectopic cilia can be difficult to detect with symptoms presenting in a similar way to other ocular conditions in dogs, however there are several signs to look out for:
- Excessive tearing, swelling, and discoloration of the eye
- Involuntary blinking, squinting, or keeping their eyes closed
- Pawing or rubbing at their face and eyes
- Corneal Ulceration
Causes of ectopic cilia
It is thought to be an inherited disorder, where genetic factors in some breeds are thought to be responsible. Some pre disposed breeds include Pekingese, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso Boxers and Flat coated retrievers. The disorder usually affects dogs under the age of two.
Treatment
Surgery is required to treat ectopic cilia and remove the root of the abnormal hair. This is generally done using our specialist operating microscope to visualise the hairs and cryosurgery to freeze the roots and prevent recurrence, although other options may be discussed depending on the quantity and position of the cilia.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia by our ophthalmologist, who will ensure that enough of the surrounding tissue is removed to prevent regrowth.
